Health and Hydration

While it’s not always our favorite beverage, we all know that water is essential for health. But why? What is it about water intake that is so important for the human body? Below, we have a few facts to answer that question! First, we have what happens when we are dehydrated- meaning we haven’t been consuming enough water for our body’s needs. Then, we have the ways in which water directly keeps us healthy. Last, we have a few tips for staying hydrated.

Dehydration can be the culprit for:

  • constipation
  • kidney stones
  • confusion/mood changes

In contrast, water helps the body:

  • maintain healthy temperatures in different climates
  • cushion the joints
  • protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues
  • get rid of waste through urination, sweat, and bowel movements

For most people, drinking water at meals and throughout the day is the best way to maintain hydration. Carrying a water bottle can help with this throughout the day instead of relying strictly on mealtimes. However, sometimes you can get your water from other sources, like the foods you eat being high in water content (like watermelon and cucumbers!). Plain coffees, teas, and sparkling waters (meaning no sugar added!) can also contribute to your water intake for something with additional flavor or even caffeine. Visit the CDC’s page on Water and Nutrition below for more on why and how to get enough water in your diet.
