COVID-19 and Underlying Medical Conditions

While the CDC is continuing to work hard to understand the different facets of COVID-19’s influence on our world, the truth is that it is still a relatively new virus and there is a lot we are still learning about it. On December 23, 2020, the CDC made important updates to the list of underlying medical conditions that are known to be risk factors in developing severe illness from the COVID-19 virus. Adults of any age with any of the medical conditions below have been deemed at an increased risk.

  • Cancer
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Down Syndrome
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies
  • Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant
  • Obesity (body mass index [BMI] of 30 kg/m2 or higher but < 40 kg/m2)
  • Severe Obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2)
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Smoking
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

There are several other conditions that the CDC speculates are also high-risk factors for developing severe illness from COVID-19 as well. For more  specific condition information and disclosures, please visit the CDC link at the bottom of this post.
