5 Tips for Dealing with Ticks

Depending on how you do it, spending time in nature can be great for exercise, inspiration, or relaxation. But with the time spent outdoors, comes the inherent risks of meeting some creepy crawlies- like ticks. Most of us will find ourselves facing these little parasites at least once in our lives and being prepared can help make it a little less stressful when it happens. Here are a few tips from the CDC to keep in mind:

  1. Prevent ticks in your yard by keeping it clear of the debris they live to live in such as leaves and overgrown grass. Create barriers of mulch or gravel between wooded spaces and your yard.
  2. When removing ticks, make sure to remove it slowly with even upward pressure so as not to leave pieces of the tick in your skin.
  3. Do not crush a tick with your fingers. Any blood the tick has in its body from other hosts could be dangerous to your health.
  4. Tick bites can cause reactions several weeks after exposure. Don’t ignore weird rashes just because it seems to have been a while since the bite.
  5. If you’re concerned ticks could be in your clothes, put them through the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes.
