3 Tips to Adding Fruits and Vegetables to Your Day

Fruits and vegetable are an important part of our diets, or at least they should be. According to the CDC they not only have essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, but those nutrients may help protect you from chronic diseases, including stroke and certain cancers. Sometimes though, it’s hard to remember to rely on fruits and vegetables as much as you probably should. Here are some reminders on how to get enough of the good stuff!

  • Keep fresh or dried fruit close by for eating on the go. Apples, bananas and pears don’t need refrigeration. Dried mango and pineapple are a sweet alternative to candy. Freeze grapes to use as an edible ice pack in lunches.
  • Substitute fruits or vegetable for other foods in certain recipes. For example, use diced steamed cauliflower mixed into macaroni and cheese, or a serving of frozen blueberries with half a serving of sherbet.
  • Remember that fruits and veggies make great party food as a guest or host! Carrots, cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, with ranch or blue cheese are a savory party appetizer. Melon, berries, and citrus fruits with whipped cream can add something sweet and healthy to a party dessert spread!
